Bare Escentuals Mineral makeup launches in Hong Kong

Bare Escentuals launches in Hong Kong with its first beauty counter at the Harvey Nichols at Pacific Place. To celebrate this exciting arrival in our town, a cocktail party and beauty demonstration was hosted at the Marquee of The Repulse Bay Hong Kong on September 28th. Despite having the T3 Typhoon warning signal hoisted on the day, but that didn’t stop us die-hard makeup fans braving the storm for the introductory party. What a fun way to spend an afternoon, hey? Trying out beautiful colourful mineral makeup over ice-cold cocktails and champagnes. I’ve been wanting to buy bareMinerals foundation online for sometime, after hearing the good word of mouth that goes around, but I was concerned about finding the right shade for my skin over the Internet. Now I finally got to try them on my face. How fantastic! If you are not familiar with bareMinerals makeup foundation and its amazing flawless coverage, you should check out the company’s website and the tutorial videos which will show you all there’s to know or, pop over to the counter and try it for yourself. And as a way to thank my valued readers, I’m giving away a bareMinerals starter kit which includes a SPF 15 foundation, a matte SPF 15 foundation, a mineral veil, a kabuki face brush, and foundation primers for the face and eyes in a lucky draw. Stay tuned this week for details and how to enter. (Terms and conditions apply. For Hong Kong residents only.)

Cleaning Your Makeup Brushes

Tools of the Trade: Makeup Brushes (4) Cleaning your makeup brushesTools of the Trade: Makeup Brushes (4) Cleaning your makeup brushesThere’s no need to stress the importance of hygiene here, I assume you all know that bacterias can grow on your brushes and on your makeup products, transferring back and forth on to your skin, and the consequences that may follow – so wash your brushes with shampoo and lukewarm water regularly. Your brushes will last a life time if it is properly cared for. For both natural or synthetic brushes, any mild shampoo, such as those made for infants, will do the job just fine or go for professional shampoo, such as the Bobbi Brown Conditioning Brush Cleanser. Since I keep my brushes in a tray, I use it to make a soapy bath for my brushes when I wash them, and simply wiggle and swirl them around the water to release the residue before giving each a gentle massage until the bristles start to give a foamy lather. Not only can I save soap and water and clean the tray at the same time doing it this way, by dipping just the brush heads in the soapy water, and not immersing the whole piece under water, the brushes are likely to last much longer too. After the brush heads are rinse thoroughly with another two or three trays of clean lukewarm water to wash the soap away, squeeze out excess water with a towel while putting the bristles back to its original shape, give the handles a few wipes, then lay flat to dry.

BR101: Messy Mascaras

BeautyRescue101Beauty Rescue 101: Did you know that when your mascaras get on to your skin, i.e. your eyelids, it’s much easier to pick out the whole piece after it dries completely and hardens, then immediately wiping it off with your hand or any dampen swab. While wiping it away when the mascara is still wet will smudge and smear the mascara on to your makeup, and we don’t want that do we, once it drys, it’s just easy peasy brushing it off with a piece of tissue paper or gently with your fingernails. There you go! A handy little tip for you if you still didn’t know!

Switch or Swap

To use your makeup brushes for more than one thing (i.e. changing colours) when you are doing your makeup, you’ll need a quick clean before each switch. For powder eye-shadows, dab the brush on a tiny pile of loose powder on top of a piece of tissue paper. Go back and forth on the tissue with the brush, working into the loose powder, the previous colour will disperse into the excess powder on the tissue leaving you with a clean brush. For a more thorough easy clean, such as to wash away liquid, gel or glittered products, use a trusty brush cleaning spray like the Bobbi Brown Brush Cleaning Spray or the Bare Escentuals’ Quick Change, pictured below. These quick drying sprays will instantly clean all traces of makeup from your brush with a quick wipe, but remember to follow with a little squirt of water and another wipe to make sure none of the cleanser’s residue is left on the brush before your next use. And just like your hair (or a wig if you’re using synthetic materials), you can blow-dry your makeup brushes too but, please, be gentle.
